aerotech’s alar series direct-drive rotary stages providesuperiorangular positioning and velocity control with exceptionallylargeapertures. with the combination of a large apertureanddirect-drive motor, the alar series makes worm-drive largeaperturestages a thing of the past.
advantage alarnow customers can get large aperture rotary stages withzerobacklash, and no gear wear or gear vibration as is commonlyseen inworm-drive stages. the other added benefit is that directdrive issignificantly faster than worm drive, so testing can becompletedin less time. in production settings, this equates tofastertesting, lower cost manufacturing, and higher profits. fromthestandpoint of system accuracy and repeatability, the stagewillmaintain its performance over time with no need formaintenancebecause there are no gears to wear out. with higheraccuracy and nobacklash, customers can produce more accurateproducts becausetheir test system is now more accurate.
applicationsapplications for the alar include single and multiaxiselectro-opticsensor testing, missile seeker testing, antennatesting, inertialnavigation device testing, photonic componentalignment,high-accuracy laser machining, and precision waferinspection. theseinclude testing in vacuum to 10-6 torr. theserotary stages can alsobe configured as multiaxisgimbals.
high speedconventional worm-drive rotaries with similar apertures andpayloadcapacity only operate to 15 rpm or less. these direct-drivestageshave been tested to 85 rpm continuous rotation – over 5timesfaster than worm drives.
superior mechanical designangular contact bearings are used to maximize performancewithrespect to wobble, moment stiffness, and rotating friction.aprecision-machined shaft further minimizes wobble. thedesignincorporates integral connections that minimize cable issues.thealar works especially well in applications that require360°continuous motion, but have limited space. the stage is 65-160mmtall and provides smooth motion withouttravelrestrictions.
brushless direct-driveto maximize positioning performance, the alar seriesutilizesaerotech’s brushless, slotless motors. this motor has allof theadvantages of a brushless direct-drive motor – no brushes towear,no gear trains to maintain, and high acceleration and highspeeds.since it is a slotless, ironless design, there is zerocogging,meaning there is absolutely no torque ripple. this makesthe alarideal for applications requiring outstanding contouredmotion,smooth scan velocity, or precise incrementalsteps.
high payload capacity and large momentloadstiffnessthe alar comes in two different configurations. the standardprofile(sp) unit has high payload capacity and high moment loadstiffnessso it can handle applications where its rotation axis isparallel orperpendicular to gravity and the payload center ofgravity iscantilevered away from the stage. the low profile (lp)unit has highpayload capacity and is good for applications wherethe axis ofrotation is parallel to gravity. both the sp and lpunits have thesame aperture options and motor options. either spor lp stages canhandle between 300-1000 lb of axialload. accurate positioningperformance is assured with encoder line counts from 31000 to74000per rev, resulting in resolutions from 0.02 arc sec/count to0.009arc sec/count. the motor and high-performance rotary encoderaredirectly coupled to a common shaft. the absence of gear trainsandmechanical couplings means no position errors caused byhysteresis,windup, or backlash. as a result, accuracy of ±3.9 arcsec andbi-directional repeatability of ±0.5 arc secisattainable.

note: 1. this is the fundamental encoder resolution beforemultiplicationor quadrature. with aerotech controls, divide theresolution by1000x to 8000x to get actual availableresolution – i.e., 10 arc- secfundamental = 10/8000 = 0.00125 arcsec actualusableresolution. 2. the alar-lp base must be fully supported by a rigidmountingplate to achieve this momentload. 3. accuracy assumes calibration.
