the agilent n7784b polarization controller containsahigh-speedpolarization controller plus microcontrollerbaseddrivingcircuitry. this unit can operate in variousmodes:aspolarizationstabilizer it provides a stable output stateofpolarization (sop)even with fluctuations and drifts of theinputsop as occurring forexample through temperature driftandmechanical settlingprocesses. the stabilized output signalisguided in a polarizationmaintaining fiber (pmf). alternativelyanexternal electricalfeedback signal can be provided forstabilizingthe sop.assynchronous scrambler the device switches thesop of theoutputsignal in a (pseudo) random way. switching of thesop occurswithinfew microseconds. the sop is stable for apredefined timeuntil itagain switches to a new sop. an electricaltrigger inputcan beused to synchronize the scrambler with externalevents.assopswitch the agilent n7784b switches to a set of sopswithhighrepeatability which allows customized implementationsofthemueller matrix method for pdl characterizationofcomponents.
