A locating ring is a circular member fitted on to the front face of the mold over the sprue bush. Its purpose is to register (or locate) the mold in the correct position on the injection machine, to ensure proper alignment between the nozzle and the sprue bush, thereby eliminating leakage.
The basic job function of the locating ring is to locate or align the orifice of the hot or cold runner with the through hole of the machine's stationary platen. The sprue orifice is usually located in the center of the sprue bushing, and the locating ring aligns the bushing with the center of the platen.
