1. Physical properties
Solubility: Magnesium sulfate is easily soluble in water, with a solubility of about 25.5g/100mL at 20°C. It is slightly soluble in ethanol, glycerol, and ether, but insoluble in acetone.
Melting point and boiling point: The melting point of magnesium sulfate is 1124°C (decomposition), and it will decompose into magnesium oxide when the boiling point is higher.
Density: Its density is 2.66g/cm³.
Appearance: Magnesium sulfate is a white crystalline powder.
2. Chemical properties
Stability: Anhydrous magnesium sulfate easily absorbs water to form magnesium sulfate containing different amounts of crystal water (such as MgSO4·nH2O, n=1,2,4,5,6,7). Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate is easily dehydrated.
Toxicity: Magnesium sulfate is considered to be of low toxicity, but its toxicity data show that the LD50 is 645mg/kg when injected subcutaneously in mice and 670-733mg/kg when injected intraperitoneally in mice. In addition, magnesium sulfate may cause irritation reactions such as stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, collapse, dyspnea and cyanosis.
III. Preparation method
There are various methods for preparing magnesium sulfate, mainly including the following:
Using magnesium oxide, magnesium hydroxide, magnesium carbonate, magnesia, etc. as raw materials, adding sulfuric acid to decompose or neutralize.
Using the by-product of potassium chloride production as raw material, it is mixed with the magnesium-containing mother liquor after production in proportion, cooled and crystallized to obtain crude magnesium sulfate, and then heated, filtered, impurities removed, cooled and crystallized to obtain industrial magnesium sulfate.
It can also be obtained by heating bittern, concentrating, crystallizing, or carbonizing magnesium oxide and gypsum water suspension.

Magnesium sulfate has a wide range of applications, mainly including:
Medical use:
It is used to treat constipation and abnormal intestinal fermentation, and is often used in combination with anthelmintics.
As a choleretic, it promotes gallbladder emptying and treats cholecystitis and cholelithiasis.
It is used for anticonvulsants, eclampsia, uremia, tetanus and hypertensive encephalopathy, etc., and works by inhibiting the central nervous system and relaxing skeletal muscles.
Magnesium sulfate injection can be used to treat emergency situations such as hypertensive crisis.
Agricultural uses:
Magnesium sulfate is an ideal raw material for making compound fertilizers. It can be mixed with nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and other elements to form various fertilizers, providing magnesium and sulfur elements for crops, which helps plant growth and increase yields.
Correct magnesium-deficient soil and improve soil quality.
Industrial uses:
Magnesium sulfate can be used as a raw material for industries such as leather making, explosives, papermaking, porcelain, and fertilizers.
It reacts with light-burned powder to form magnesium oxysulfide cement, which has fire resistance, heat preservation, durability and environmental protection, and is widely used in fireproof door core boards, exterior wall insulation boards and other fields.
Other uses:
Magnesium sulfate can also be used for anti-inflammatory and swelling removal. Its 50% solution has this effect when applied to the affected area for hot compress.
Used as bath salts to provide magnesium and sulfur supplements.
