The extracted gums are typically dried and transformed into lecithin, a highly valuable by-product. Alternatively, these gums can be reintegrated into the meal during the extraction process if desired.. Efficient degumming ensures that minimal material needs to be extracted later during the neutralization phase. Furthermore, it results in a reduced production of soapstock, thereby decreasing the need for additional treatment or disposal measures.


Enzymatic water degumming For oils with elevated phospholipid content, Reyes advocates the use of enzymatic water degumming. This innovative approach employs the phospholipase C enzyme (PLC) to break down phospholipids into diacylglycerol (DAG) and a water-soluble, phosphate-bearing ester fragment. This process not only significantly reduces gum content but also minimizes oil loss and enhances the yield of neutral oil.
Enzymatic deep degumming By treating seed oils with a minuscule amount of acid, gums are effectively reduced to a level that allows for further processing.
